Macaulay Culkin has finally addressed a long-standing mystery that has perplexed fans of *Home Alone* for years.
With the holiday season rapidly approaching, many have already started their annual binge of classic Christmas movies, and *Home Alone* is undoubtedly on that list.
Even though it has been over three decades since the film’s release, it remains a staple in festive viewing traditions.
For those who need a refresher, the story revolves around Kevin McCallister, portrayed by a young Culkin, who finds himself home alone after his family departs for Paris, accidentally leaving him behind.
Viewers have often wondered how Kevin’s parents could have made such a significant oversight, but the film explains this with the family oversleeping and hastily rushing to the airport, resulting in a headcount mistake.

However, another question has intrigued audiences: what did Kevin’s parents do to afford their lavish home near Chicago?
The McCallister family clearly enjoys a wealthy lifestyle, as evidenced by their ability to fund a family trip to France, which includes Kevin’s siblings, cousins, aunts, and uncles.
Moreover, their large home accommodates all 15 family members before the trip, and its location in an upscale area attracts the notorious ‘Wet Bandits’, Harry and Marv, who plan to rob neighborhood homes during the Christmas season.

One Reddit user questioned, “Seriously, what did Kevin’s dad do for a living? Honestly, even in the 90s that house had to be expensive.”
Macaulay Culkin, now 45, has offered his perspective in a recent interview with Postmedia, suggesting what Kevin’s parents might have done to afford their lifestyle.
“I think his father was a corporate lawyer, that’s how they were able to afford such nice things and live in a nice neighbourhood.
“His mother was an interior decorator, that’s why the house was so nice.”

Culkin’s theory aligns with what director Chris Columbus mentioned about the parents’ possible occupations. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards podcast, Columbus recalled, “Back then, John and I had a conversation about it, and we decided on what the jobs were. We thought the mother, at the time, because we used mannequins in the basement — I do remember having a conversation — she was a very successful fashion designer.
“The father could have, based on John Hughes’ own experience, worked in advertising, but I don’t remember what the father did.”
