Man who shot teen Ralph Yarl for ringing incorrect doorbell dies after admitting guilt

Andrew Lester, the man who shot teenager Ralph Yarl after the latter mistakenly rang his doorbell, has passed away.

On April 13, 2023, 16-year-old Yarl approached Lester’s home in Kansas City, confusing it for another residence. He was there to collect his twin brothers from a friend’s house but mistakenly went to the wrong address. This small error nearly cost him his life as Lester shot him in the head.

Lester reportedly believed that Yarl was attempting to break into his home. Remarkably, Yarl survived the life-threatening injuries and was discharged from the hospital shortly thereafter.

A GoFundMe campaign, now closed, was initiated to assist Yarl with his recovery and future. It successfully raised an astonishing $3.4 million.

Lester was charged and initially entered a not-guilty plea, securing his release on a $200,000 bond, according to ABC News.

However, on February 14, Lester pleaded guilty to felony assault in the second degree, which carries a potential sentence of seven years in prison. He was scheduled for sentencing on March 7, but he passed away before then.

Following Lester’s death, Clay County Prosecuting Attorney Zachary Thompson expressed condolences to Lester’s family.

“We have learned of the passing of Andrew Lester and extend our sincere condolences to his family during this difficult time,” he stated.

“While the legal proceedings have now concluded, we acknowledge that Mr. Lester did take responsibility for his actions by pleading guilty in this case. Our thoughts remain with both families affected by this tragic incident as they continue their healing process.”

Yarl’s family also commented on Lester’s death, describing it as bringing “a mix of emotions.”

They told ABC News: “We remain committed to seeking a world where no child fears for their life because of their race, and no family has to endure what we have. Ralph’s story is far from over, and neither is our fight for justice.”

The shooting of Yarl was a highly controversial event. Although Lester was initially questioned by police, he was released without being charged, which led to widespread protests in Kansas City. These demonstrations were supported by celebrities such as Halle Berry, Jennifer Hudson, and Kerry Washington, reports BBC News. Ultimately, an arrest warrant was issued, and Lester surrendered to authorities.
