Many are just discovering the difference between 2XL and XXL sizes

I’ve run into this issue several times: as sizes increase, the measurements often don’t align with the typical sizing system. I’ve frequently bought my dad golf shirts for Christmas and birthdays. If he’s a golf enthusiast, it’s a reliable gift choice for any occasion.

I’ve seen labels marked as 2XL or XXL and was initially puzzled, thinking the additional ‘X’ would mean XXXL. Turns out, it’s more nuanced than that.

Plus-sized TikToker Makayla Smith provides a clear explanation in her video, prompting her audience with: “Should I make a video explaining the difference between XXL and 2XL??”

With over 45,000 followers, the fashion and lifestyle influencer has shared several insights on this topic. In one video, she mentions: “They are usually cut a bit differently, with 2XL being larger and designed with plus-size bodies in mind.”

Essentially, there are two fits for a similar size – though Smith notes that 2XL is somewhat larger.

The revelation prompted reactions like: “WHAT. And this comes from someone who is plus size lmao.”

Another person added: “I’m also xxl/2x my professor told me that XXL are is based on ‘straight’ misses category while 2X is in the ‘plus’ women’s category.”

A third offered clarification: “Retail worker here – xxl is still considered ‘straight sizing’ and basically just a larger size. 2X is made from a plus size pattern.”

From my perspective as a large, it seems like those wearing XXL/2XL have the advantage of choosing their preferred fit. However, this isn’t always viewed as a benefit by the plus-size community.

One user lamented: “Omg JUST GIVE US UNITS PPPLLLLZZZ. INCHES. CMS. ANYTHING,” while another questioned: “I never realized this. What are the biggest differences that you notice between the sizes?”

Smith responded: “Length I notice most! Usually some more width and longer sleeves as well. It has to do with XXL being straight sizing vs 2XL being plus sizing.”

Another commenter noted: “Thank you!!! i have to tell people this for christmas time, i tell them please go to plus size sections cause sizing is F***DD.”

And if sizing wasn’t already perplexing enough!
