Social media users are expressing mixed feelings about Mariah Carey, often dubbed the Queen of Christmas, following her recent performance.
Mariah Carey took the spotlight at the 50th Anniversary Special of the American Music Awards (AMAs), held at LA Center Studios in Los Angeles on October 6.
The 55-year-old artist, who holds 10 AMAs to her name, performed a medley of hits from a particular iconic album. However, her performance didn’t sit well with everyone.
In anticipation of her performance, Carey shared her thoughts with the AMAs as they celebrated the event’s 50th anniversary.
She remarked: “It’s pretty amazing to be a part of the 50th anniversary of the American Music Awards. This was the first awards show I ever was on. Ever since then, I’ve always just been grateful to be a part of all the moments.”
Carey began her set with ‘Don’t Forget About Us’, marking an anniversary of her own – 2025 will be the 20th year since the release of her tenth studio album, The Emancipation of Mimi (2005).
She addressed the audience, saying: “It’s really just an incredible thing that it’s lasted this long.”
She followed this with the second single from the album, ‘We Belong Together’.
However, the authenticity of her live singing was questioned by some viewers on social media.
One Twitter user commented: “Mariah’s lip syncs are always so noticeable #AMAs50.”
“I hate that Mariah has to lip sync now. Her vocals in the 90s were INSANE,” said another.
A third viewer questioned: “Do y’all think the final part of Mariah’s performance at the AMAs was live?”
UNILAD has reached out to Mariah Carey’s team for a statement.
Nonetheless, many fans came to Carey’s defense.

One supporter wrote: “Waking up and watching Mariah at the AMAs.. the legend that she is.”
Another commented: “FLAWLESS performance Mariah!!”
And a third added: “Man…y’all gotta STOP saying Mariah Carey lip syncs EVERY TIME she performs smh.”
Whether or not some parts of her performance were lip-synced, it seems she’s still warming up in some fans’ eyes.
But she is likely to be in full festive spirit for her upcoming Christmas tour, which runs from November 6 to December 17, alongside the next phase of her residency.
Mariah Carey’s residency, Mariah Carey: The Celebration of Mimi, kicked off earlier this year. The Live in Las Vegas segment will begin on January 31, with Carey performing eight shows, and will wrap up on February 15.
