One of the highlights of any wedding is often the cake, and Martin Short was particularly eager to sample the one at Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s celebration…
In September, Gomez and Blanco exchanged vows in a glamorous ceremony attended by stars like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Paris Hilton, and Emily in Paris actress Ashley Park.
Their nuptials took place at the picturesque Sea Crest Nursery in Santa Barbara, California. Among the guests was Gomez’s Only Murders in the Building co-star, Martin Short, who joined in the festivities with other celebrity friends.
However, Short and Gomez’s close friendship might have been tested when the actor made a notable mistake with the wedding cake.
While chatting with Jimmy Kimmel about the event, Short recounted: “There were big, big tents and at the back of the tents were these individual seating areas with couches and chairs.
“And there was a cake, a wedding cake, by our section. But it was a small wedding cake.”
The 75-year-old actor admitted his assumption: “I just assumed there was a wedding cake for each section in the back. After a few hours, they haven’t cut their wedding cake yet… Steve [Martin] said he was gonna leave.”
Short, not wanting Martin to depart, attempted to cut him a slice using a fork. Unfortunately, the cake he had chosen was, in fact, the main wedding cake.
“Then all the people in our group then shouted ‘MARTY!’ […] and this was about an hour before it was supposed to be presented,” he continued with his tale.
“I turned to Paul Rudd and said, ‘So, do we just leave?'”

The wedding planner was soon informed of Short’s error, prompting the chef to come and perform ‘surgery’ on the cake, correcting the mishap.
“It was very like a Hollywood wedding cake in that it was beautiful but it had a little work done,” Short joked.
Kimmel inquired if Gomez was aware of what had happened, but Short preferred not to inform her. Nevertheless, she eventually learned of the incident and seemed amused by it all.
The actor recounted: “As I was leaving Selena came up to me and said, ‘Hey Marty, I heard you tried to eat my cake.'”
All in all, it makes for a humorous story to pass down through the generations…
