Matthew McConaughey, known for his remarkable acting skills, has shared the heartwarming reasons behind his decision to distance himself from Hollywood.
Contrary to popular belief, McConaughey isn’t frequently seen mingling with industry insiders at Hollywood gatherings. In 2014, he chose to leave his Malibu, California residence for Texas, despite Hollywood being the epicenter of the film industry.
Recently, McConaughey discussed his motivations for relocating during an appearance on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna.
On the October 24 episode, which was filmed in Austin, Texas, McConaughey expressed: “This has always been home, I mean, there’s multiple reasons for that. I mean, this is where I have a great relationship with time – meaning 60 seconds feels like a minute, a mile feels like a mile.”
It seems that the fast-paced ‘Hollywood minute’ isn’t as attractive to him anymore.
A native of Uvalde, Texas, and raised in Longview, Texas, McConaughey’s return to the state was largely influenced by family, particularly his children.
His family, including his 92-year-old mother and brothers, resides in Houston and Midland.
McConaughey explained: “Our family unit is here, we have resources and a backbone of security here.”
He always planned to return to Texas as he expanded his family with his wife, Camila Alves. Together, they have three children: Levi, 15, Vida, 14, and Livingston, 11.
The couple married in Austin in 2012 and relocated there from California two years later.
Austin’s welcoming and creative atmosphere appealed to McConaughey. He described it as a ‘very creative city in a state that is very structured.’
He stated: “I wanted them to have what I grew up around. There’s a solid … amount of common sense that runs through it, it’s untalked about, but we understand it here. The rule in Austin is ‘Be You’ – that’s always been the rule in this city – and we should make sure that that remains the rule – just ‘Be You.’”
