Matthew McConaughey’s Strong Belief that Woody Harrelson Might Actually Be His Brother

Matthew McConaughey firmly believes he could share familial ties with Woody Harrelson.

The two acclaimed actors have shared a long-standing friendship since the 1990s, further solidified by their collaboration on the popular TV series True Detective.

Over the years, McConaughey and Harrelson have often remarked on the depth of their relationship, comparing it to that of siblings.

Appropriately, they are set to appear in a comedy series titled Brothers, which fictionalizes their lives and imagines them living together with their families at McConaughey’s ranch in Texas.

Interestingly, there might be some truth to the sibling notion.

This possibility emerged during a conversation McConaughey had with his mother, Mary.

“My kids call him Uncle Woody,” McConaughey shared during Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast. “His kids call me Uncle Matthew. My family thinks many pictures of him are me, and vice versa.”

While vacationing in Greece, McConaughey’s mom made an intriguing revelation about her past acquaintance with Harrelson’s father.

“And my mom is there, and she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad’. Everyone sensed the implication in the way she said ‘knew’. It was a suggestive K-N-E-W,” he mentioned.

Adding to the intrigue, both actors originate from Texas, were born in the 1960s, and bear notable physical resemblances.

In a separate chat with Access Daily, McConaughey relayed his mom’s comment: “‘Just saying, we might have frequented the same similar place out in West Texas one time when he was on furlough.’”

He added: “And we all went, ‘What? What, are you going to leave it there?’

“Now we gotta go do some DNA tests.”

Through further reflection, they figured that it could be plausible that Mary, who was in the midst of a divorce, might have had a liaison with Harrelson’s father, Charles Harrelson.

During an interview on Radio X, host Johnny Vaughan inquired: “Woody, about your project Brothers with Matthew McConaughey, have you looked into whether you might actually be related?”

The actor from The Hunger Games responded: “We haven’t done the DNA test yet, but we’re likely going to. I think there’s a genuine possibility.”

However, a specific timeline for conducting the DNA test has not been set.

Harrelson shared that for McConaughey, uncovering a brotherly connection would be significant.

On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he explained: “I mean, he feels like he is losing a father. But I’m like, no, you’re gaining a different father and a brother.”
