Matilda is a two-year-old tabby who looks nothing like any cat you’ve seen before. In fact, her dark and glassy eyes make her look more like an otherworldly extraterrestrial being than a furry feline.
Because of her unique appearance, Matilda has gained a steady online following, with over 35,000 fans on Instagram.
Shortly after she turned one, Matilda’s right pupil became enlarged. After consulting several vets and the owners of Matilda’s littermates, it was found that Matilda and her siblings have a condition called spontaneous lens luxation, in which the lens detaches from the rest of the eye. The reason for this is unknown.
It was not long before both of Matilda’s lenses eventually detached, leaving her unable to see. It also left the kitty with eyes that look like they contain the galaxy.
In true feline fashion, Matilda does not let her loss of vision deter her from doing normal, cat-like things, and even basks upon the attention she receives due to her unique eyes.
“She also loves tissue paper, cardboard boxes, and her scratching post. She likes to make the dog uncomfortable by walking too close to his face,” her owner said.
She added, “She loves to eat and will cry like the world is ending if her dish isn’t full.”
Matilda’s condition gave her owners cause to worry that the kitty might need to undergo surgery for glaucoma. They recently announced that Matilda is now healthy and happily glaucoma-free.
Nice try, humans, but we’re not so easily fooled. We know an alien overlord when we see one.
