She posed alongside co-star Paul W. Downs, who wrapped his arms around her gilded waist as she held the trophy’s signature atom aloft.
The stunt marked a dramatic pivot from her viral appearance at the same event last year, when she wore light-wash Levi’s, a Hanes T-shirt and a tote bag reading “Cease fire!” That casual political statement had dominated social conversation, but this year’s look traded protest gear for full costume spectacle.
Stalter’s nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy represents her first Emmy recognition. She earned the nod for playing Kayla Schaefer in the fifth and final season of HBO Max’s “Hacks.” The category pits her against castmate Hannah Einbinder, who took home the trophy last year, plus Janelle James of “Abbott Elementary,” Michelle Pfeiffer for “Margo’s Got Money Troubles” and Jessica Williams of “Shrinking.”
The gold-statuete moment was not Stalter’s first red-carpet collaboration with Downs. The pair teamed up at the Critics Choice Awards in January for a parody that drew wide attention, cosplaying as Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet in matching bright orange outfits. Those looks were deliberate knockoffs of the leather Chrome Hearts ensembles the celebrity couple had worn to the “Marty Supreme” premiere the month prior.
Stalter’s recent months have been packed with career milestones beyond the Emmys stage. She made her Broadway debut in July as Mary Todd Lincoln in “Oh, Mary!,” wrapping her 10-week run at the Lyceum Theatre just this past Saturday. She also stars as Jessica Salmon in Lena Dunham’s Netflix comedy “Too Much,” released her debut single “Prettiest Girl in America” this year, and appeared in a Vivaia shoe campaign alongside New York fashion icon Jenna Lyons last month — though she said she “really” doesn’t wear heels in general.
The comedian’s nomination arrives as “Hacks” concludes its run, with the final season delivering the performance that put her in contention against established comedy veterans. Whether the costume choice foreshadowed actual hardware remained to be seen as the ceremony continued Monday night.
