Ari Emanuel has made clear he has no stake in Meghan Markle’s next career chapter.
The Hollywood power broker, 65, confirmed in a weekend interview with the Sunday Times that he and the Duchess of Sussex, 43, ended their professional relationship last year. When the reporter pressed him on where he believes her career is headed, Emanuel offered a terse dismissal.
“Here’s the great thing, I don’t have to think about that anymore,” he said.
The split had been rumored for months before Emanuel’s confirmation. Meghan first signed with WME in April 2023 in a move widely seen as her bid to become a Hollywood power player behind the camera rather than in front of it. A source connected to the signing told outlets at the time that the arrangement was not about securing acting roles. “Even though she is, of course, an actress, this isn’t about movies or shows for Meghan to star in, it is about creating projects for her to produce – she wants to run the show,” the source said. A second insider added that Archewell’s representation by WME “bolsters Harry and Meghan’s bid to become power players in the production arena.”
Yet the collaboration with Emanuel personally had already cooled by early 2024. WME acknowledged that Meghan had not held any meetings with Emanuel since January of that year, though the agency itself continues to represent both her and Archewell, the production company she runs with Prince Harry.
Reports said that an industry insider claimed Meghan was let go from the agency because she was “too demanding” and “difficult to work with.” The same source pointed to a January 2024 clash, alleging that Meghan had demanded a meeting and “expected decks and plans.” The insider claimed: “Ari [Emanuel] was done with her.”
The timing of Emanuel’s blunt remarks coincides with significant upheaval in the Sussexes’ living situation. The family — Harry, Meghan, seven-year-old Prince Archie and five-year-old Princess Lilibet — recently relocated back to the United Kingdom after several years in California. Their return has been complicated by an ongoing Home Office review of their security arrangements. Their armed police protection was withdrawn after they stepped back from frontline royal duties in 2020, and they have since relied on self-funded private security. Multiple reports now suggest the couple could leave Britain again if the government does not restore automatic, state-funded protection. Palace Confidential podcast commentator Richard Eden criticized the apparent stance as “akin to blackmail,” warning that restoring automatic protection would carry profound financial ramifications for the public.
What Meghan and Harry are planning professionally while on UK soil remains unclear, though Emanuel’s involvement is definitively over.
Emanuel’s client roster has long included some of entertainment’s biggest names, among them Kim Kardashian, Oprah Winfrey, Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg.
