Melania Trump drew major attention in Washington in April 2026 after making a rare public statement at the White House in which she rejected any link to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
On April 9, she addressed the rumors directly and pushed back on claims about any connection, saying the “lies linking me with the disgraceful Jeffrey Epstein need to end today.”
“need to end today”
At the time, there was little clarity about what had triggered the remarks, and the First Lady did not identify any single incident or news report that prompted her to speak out.
President Donald Trump later said he was aware his wife planned to speak publicly, but insisted he did not know what she intended to say.
Jacqui Heinrich, the White House Correspondent for Fox News, described the moment as unexpected.
“It came out of left field for us.”
Now, months later, the First Lady’s senior adviser has explained that the point was to make her position unmistakably clear and to center the victims of Epstein’s abuse.
Speaking to Politico, senior adviser Marc Beckman said the goal was to leave no doubt that Melania Trump had no connection to Epstein.
“It was about going on the record to talk about the fact that she wasn’t connected with, is not connected with, Jeffrey Epstein at all,” senior adviser to the First Lady Marc Beckman told Politico.
He also said she wanted to advocate for those harmed by Epstein.
“wanted to to be a champion and a leader for the victims”
Beckman said that effort included urging lawmakers to hear directly from survivors.
“And then finally she called on Congress to give the victims the ability to go on the congressional record, sit in front of Congress if they want, and go on the record,” he concluded.
In her original remarks, Melania denied having any relationship with Epstein or Ghislaine Maxwell. She also said Epstein did not introduce her to Donald Trump.
According to her account, she met Trump by chance at a New York City event in 1998.
‘by chance’
She said her first brief encounter with Epstein came in 2000 and described it as merely crossing paths. She also said she had no awareness of the abuse tied to him and noted that people in New York City and Palm Beach often shared the same social scene.
‘crossed paths’
‘never had any knowledge of Epstein’s abuse of his victims.’
‘invited to the same parties from time to time,’
‘overlapping in social circles is common in New York City and Palm Beach.’
Elsewhere in the speech, she repeated that she had no involvement of any kind.
“I have never had any knowledge of Epstein’s abuse of his victims,” the 56-year-old said elsewhere in the speech. “I was never involved in any capacity. I was not a participant.”
She also addressed manipulated or misleading images circulating online that appeared to show her with Epstein, urging the public not to accept everything at face value.
‘be cautious about what you believe’
BREAKING: Epstein survivors are not buying Melania’s comments. In a statement they say survivors “have already shown extraordinary courage by coming forward, filing reports, and giving testimony. At the same time, she publicly called for survivors to be allowed to testify to Congress under oath.
“Give these victims their opportunity to testify under oath in front of Congress, with the power of sworn testimony. Each and every woman should have her day to tell her story in public.”
Her comments prompted a response from more than a dozen Epstein survivors, who issued a joint letter demanding that the remaining Epstein files be fully released.
In that letter, the group said survivors had already done more than enough by speaking out and participating in official processes, arguing that responsibility should not be placed back on them.
“Survivors of Jeffrey Epstein have already shown extraordinary courage by coming forward, filing reports, and giving testimony. Asking more of them now is a deflection of responsibility, not justice,” the letter began, as they accused Melania of ‘shifting the burden’ onto survivors, rather than the Justice Department and ‘diverting attention from Pam Bondi’.
The letter also said former US Attorney General Bondi should be held accountable over unreleased material and the handling of survivors’ identities.
They said former US Attorney General Bondi must ‘answer for withheld files and the exposure of survivors’ identities’.
Neither the President nor the First Lady has been accused of criminal wrongdoing in connection with Epstein.
