Melissa McCarthy has spoken about the private conversations that reshaped her understanding of JonBenét Ramsey’s childhood.
McCarthy, 56, said that she sought out people who had actually known Patsy Ramsey while preparing to portray the mother in Netflix’s upcoming limited series “The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey.” Those conversations revealed a home life far removed from the pageant imagery that saturated media coverage after the six-year-old’s 1996 death.
“And they were like, ‘Those kids were in jeans riding their bikes. JonBenét wasn’t out in a pageant dress in her front yard,'” McCarthy said.
The “Bridesmaids” star admitted she had once accepted the public narrative without question. She recalled standing in a grocery store at age 26, staring at tabloid photographs of JonBenét in elaborate costumes and makeup. “In 1996, I was 26, and I have a very vivid memory of standing in a grocery store and looking at a tabloid and thinking, ‘How could you dress a little girl like that?’ Because that’s what we were being told,” she said.
That reflection led to a uncomfortable realization about her own complicity in the spectacle. “I had never put it together that I was a part of [judging them]. I went willingly. And that’s on me,” McCarthy said.
The actress initially rejected the role outright when approached. “Oh, no. I have no interest in that,” she said of her first reaction. She changed course only after deciding she owed the family the respect of genuine research before declining.
What McCarthy discovered shifted her perspective dramatically. “The more I started to, I was really floored by the lack of humanity that had been shown to that family,” she explained.
That research has since translated into an unexpected emotional attachment. “This might sound nuts: I’m very fond of Patsy. I have so much compassion for them, what they went through, and go through currently,” McCarthy said.
JonBenét was found dead in the basement of her family’s Boulder, Colorado home on December 26, 1996, hours after her parents reported her missing. Her murder remains unsolved nearly three decades later, with the case becoming one of America’s most infamous true crime mysteries. Photographs of JonBenét in pageant attire became some of the most widely circulated images associated with the case, shaping public perception of the family for years.
Patsy Ramsey died from ovarian cancer in 2006. Clive Owen co-stars in the Netflix series as her husband John.
McCarthy now hopes the series prompts viewers to reconsider how the Ramsey family was consumed as public entertainment.
“The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey” premieres on Netflix on December 10.
