A top leader in Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel has been arrested on suspicion of ordering the livestreamed murder of a 23-year-old beauty influencer, nearly 14 months after the shocking killing that unfolded on camera before thousands of viewers. The arrest represents a major break in a case that transfixed Mexico with its brutality and public execution.
Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, known as “El R-1,” was taken into custody in a federal operation on July 30 in Atotonilco El Alto, Jalisco, according to Mexican Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch. Authorities identified Álvarez Ayala as the leader of Los Rs, a violent criminal cell linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, with operations spanning Michoacán and Jalisco. During his arrest, his security team opened fire on federal forces, resulting in one death.
The case centers on the May 13, 2025 killing of Valeria Márquez, who was shot to death while streaming live on TikTok from her beauty salon, Blossom the Beauty Lounge, in Zapopan. Márquez, 23, was a model and influencer with more than 140,000 followers on the video platform. Authorities allege that Álvarez Ayala ordered her killing after she ended a relationship with his son, Francisco Álvarez.
According to authorities, the alleged motive was personal rather than criminal. García Harfuch stated that Francisco had been in a romantic relationship with Márquez and had threatened her on several occasions. When she broke off the relationship, officials say Francisco asked his father to arrange her murder. “The son of R1 had a romantic relationship with Valeria. He had threatened her on several occasions, and everything indicates, and this will be proven, that the son asked his father, R1, to carry out the feminicide,” García Harfuch announced.
The execution was executed with calculated precision. Authorities allege that the gunman, posing as a delivery driver, entered the beauty salon and asked Márquez to confirm her identity. Once she acknowledged him, he opened fire, shooting her in the chest and head before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle. The killing was captured in its entirety by viewers watching her livestream.
In the moments before her death, Márquez had appeared anxious. Earlier in the livestream, she told viewers that two men had visited the salon claiming to have an expensive gift for her. “Maybe they were going to kill me,” she said minutes before the attack, her words haunting in retrospect. When the gunman returned, she was seen saying “They’re coming” before a voice off-camera addressed her. She responded “Yes” and muted the livestream audio. Seconds later, she collapsed.
The killing shocked Mexico and drew international attention. Márquez was handed a stuffed animal moments before being fatally shot. The graphic footage continued even after the shooting, capturing the aftermath before someone grabbed her phone and ended the broadcast. TikTok subsequently removed her account.
The case was initially investigated as a femicide without clear leads. However, authorities later connected Álvarez Ayala to the murder through forensic evidence, phone communications, financial transfers, and witness statements. The investigation into Márquez’s death became part of a broader criminal probe into Álvarez Ayala’s organization.
The arrest is also significant for another violent crime. Officials allege that Álvarez Ayala ordered and financed the November 1, 2025 assassination of Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan in Michoacán, who was shot during Day of the Dead celebrations. Manzo was known as an outspoken anti-crime crusader who had spoken out against organized crime’s grip on the region. Authorities say the cartel killed him after interpreting his anti-crime stance as provocation.
García Harfuch described Álvarez Ayala as a key operator of one of the most violent criminal cells linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which operates across multiple municipalities in Michoacán and Jalisco. The arrest represents the 31st related to Manzo’s murder.
Francisco Álvarez, the son allegedly behind the request to kill Márquez, remains at large. The suspected gunman in the influencer’s death has also not been apprehended. Authorities have indicated that investigations are continuing to identify all individuals involved in the operation that resulted in Márquez’s death.
The case underscores Mexico’s ongoing struggle with cartel violence and femicide. In 2024, Mexico recorded nearly 800 femicides, and the country ranks second-highest in Latin America for gender-based killings of women.
