Mike Tyson is unlikely to be boasting about his recent heavyweight ranking.
Last week marked Tyson’s return to professional boxing after nearly twenty years, where he faced Jake Paul.
At 31 years older than Paul, the age difference was apparent at times during the match.
Tyson managed to land only 18 punches, while Paul successfully connected 78 times.
Considering these statistics, it’s not surprising that the YouTuber-turned-boxer took the victory. Though Paul couldn’t knock Tyson out, he still emerged as the winner according to the judge’s scorecards.
Following his recent loss, Tyson, who once held the title of undisputed world heavyweight champion, has seen a significant drop in the global rankings.
Nearly four decades after his boxing debut in 1985, the 58-year-old Tyson is now ranked 309th in the latest BoxRec heavyweight standings, according to The Express. This places him 183 spots behind the 27-year-old Paul.
Although this current rank is a stark contrast to his glory days, it doesn’t overshadow Tyson’s remarkable achievements.
BoxRec records show Tyson has secured 50 wins throughout his extensive career, with 44 victories by knockout. He has suffered seven losses, the latest being the match against Paul.
After their much-anticipated bout, both Tyson and Paul have received suspensions.
However, this suspension is temporary, lasting only 24 days.
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which supervised the fight in Arlington, issued the suspension, ensuring both fighters have adequate time to physically recover from the heavyweight match.
According to regulations, boxers must observe a mandatory rest period of three days for each round fought.
Since Paul and Tyson completed all eight rounds, they are required to rest for the full 24 days.
Following his victory over Tyson, Paul shared a heartfelt message on social media directed at his opponent.
He wrote: “Thank you to every fighter on the card last night, thank u Netflix, thank u Jerry Jones, thank u to my MVP team, thank u to the legend Mike Tyson for giving me a chance to share the ring with him, thank u to my family and close circle of friends..and above all, thank you God.”
In another instance, the 27-year-old seemed to challenge Conor McGregor for an MMA fight.
McGregor responded in a now-deleted tweet with an image of 82-year-old Senator Mitch McConnell, stating: “Nakisa [Bidarian] already rang me, lad, it’s this guy next for you. Good luck pal.”
