A new movie on Netflix set in 2003 has left Millennials in shock.
This film, released on Netflix on October 30, features Outer Banks’ Madison Bailey as Lucy Field. Lucy is a teenager who journeys back to the early 2000s to prevent her sister’s murder.
In “Time Cut,” Lucy, a science enthusiast, finds a time machine that transports her back to 2003.
Upon her arrival in the past, Lucy’s singular goal is to rescue her older sister, Summer.
Madison explained to Tudum, “My character’s in 2024, living in the shadow of her older sister,”
“Going back and meeting this sister who I’d never met before, I’m seeing this light in her and I’m connecting the dots of my own life.”
Directed by Hannah Macpherson, the film takes millennial viewers on a nostalgic journey.
However, the throwbacks have left them feeling a bit horrified.
In a scene from the movie shared on X, Lucy steps into her sister’s high school, encountering Heelys, tall UGG boots, flip phones, mp3 players, and Walkmans.
The soundtrack is packed with early 2000s hits like Avril Lavigne’s ‘Complicated’ and Hilary Duff’s ‘So Yesterday.’
Despite these elements, Millennials have expressed their dismay, claiming it’s ‘not how they remember 2003.’ Many viewers are quite upset by the portrayal.
Some noted that a character in the trailer appears to use a Walkman like a cell phone, while others remarked that the fashion seemed more like 2008 than 2003.
One viewer commented on X, “This doesn’t look like 2003, idk how to explain it, but this looks like 2024 pretending to be 2003.”
Another viewer noted, “I went to high school between 2006-2010 the fashion here is much more relevant to that time.”
Another added, “This looks like what someone born in 2003 thought 2003 looked like.”
Yet another commented, “2003 was really not like that. You can’t get the vibes with clothes, make up, hair from 2024. That’s really not the same quality we had back then. We were not obsessed with the electronics we had too. People were not with their mp3 in the hand all day.”
Some viewers were hoping to see iconic early 2000s styles, with one asking for more frosted lips and another stating: “Not a frosted tip in sight. No goths or punks. No hemp necklaces. No t-shirt over long sleeve tee. Did they not have a single 40yo working on this production?”
Time Cut is currently available on Netflix.
