Brittany Ritter’s aunt confirmed the worst in a raw Facebook post.
“Brittany has been found,” Sherry Straub-Guess wrote on the platform. “It is not the outcome we had hoped for but she is now forever home.”
The 37-year-old mother of two from Holland, Ohio, had vanished during the early morning hours of Sept. 2, leaving family desperate and police searching. Her body turned up roughly 130 miles away, discovered Sept. 3 by a Norfolk Southern Railway employee on top of a stopped train in an Elkhart, Indiana, yard, according to the Elkhart Police Department.
The train had originated in the east and traveled west, a detail that deepens the puzzle of how Ritter ended up so far from home.
Cops noted she may have been traveling by bicycle when she disappeared, and relatives had been unable to reach her. The Lucas County Sheriff’s Office in Ohio issued a statement saying the family was “concerned for her welfare” as the hours stretched on.
Straub-Guess, in her emotional Facebook message, extended gratitude to the army of volunteers who scoured the region for her niece. “Thank you for all the prayers and shares and comments that have been sent this past week,” she wrote. “It takes a village and this past weekend we had that village of people looking for Britt!”
She added that the family “continues seeking the truth of what really happened.”
A GoFundMe launched to cover funeral costs described Ritter as a “proud mother of two sons” and a “beloved mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend” who wrestled with mental health challenges. The fundraiser statement struck a defiant note about how she should be remembered.
“Although she struggled with mental health challenges, those who knew her recognized her strength, valued her life, and will remember her with dignity and compassion,” the page said.
The Elkhart County Homicide Unit initially took the lead probing the circumstances, but has since handed the case to the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office. Ritter’s cause and manner of death remain unreleased, and the Elkhart medical examiner did not immediately respond to comment requests.
The Lucas County Sheriff’s Office offered condolences in its own statement. “Our thoughts are with Brittany’s family, friends, and all those who knew and cared about her,” officials wrote. “We recognize the tremendous grief that comes with news like this and extend our deepest sympathy to everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss.”
Investigators said they are still probing Ritter’s death and would not release additional details.
