Police in Michigan say the man responsible for the deaths of his wife and six children last Friday was Kristopher Karolkiewicz.
Investigators have said the mass killing falls under the definition of a “family annihilation,” a term used for cases in which one person kills multiple close family members. Such cases are comparatively rare, but experts say they can be associated with relationship breakdowns, control issues, financial stress, or a fear of loss.
Autopsy reports reviewed by The Guardian show the Ottawa County sheriff’s department confirmed that every member of the Karolkiewicz family, including the couple’s six children, died from gunshot wounds.
Authorities say Kristopher Karolkiewicz shot his wife, Amanda, and their six children before taking his own life. The family were later discovered at their burning home in Grand Haven Township, on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan.
The report states that the fire was deliberately set by Kristopher, who had “intentionally” started blazes in several locations around the property after killing his family.
Officials also said they had not yet identified the exact point where the fire began.
Karolkiewicz, 47, had worked as vice-president of sales and marketing for the American Heart Association before his employment ended earlier this month. Amanda, who went by Mandy, was an elementary school substitute teacher in the Grand Haven area.
Reports have pointed to signs of strain in the couple’s marriage. According to posts reported by the Detroit News, Amanda Karolkiewicz wrote online in 2024 about discovering that her husband had been involved in an emotional affair with an intern at work.
Those posts also suggested the relationship had been difficult for years and that she had at times considered leaving, though the couple remained together and were still trying to work through their problems for the sake of their children.
According to AP, the couple met at work in 2008 and married in August 2009. Their family grew over the years to include six children, ages 5 to 15, four biological and two adopted.
Ottawa County Sheriff Eric DeBoer said in a statement read out by deputy captain Jacob Sparks:
“This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand.
“The investigation at this point shows that this was a murder-suicide, with the fire being started after the murders,” he added. “The case remains open and under investigation to try to get to the bottom and get answers of what happened leading up to the incident.”
Emergency crews were first sent to the Karolkiewicz property after reports of a “smoky smell” near the home, but at that stage they did not find anything.
About three hours later, they were called back and found smoke pouring from the property. Once inside, responders discovered the bodies of the family, along with their dogs and cats.
Officials said investigators believe the killings may have happened the night before or in the early hours of July 24, before the fire was reported. The exact sequence of events remains under investigation.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, the deaths were the 13th mass murder recorded in the US in 2026.
Of those incidents, eight officially meet the definition of a “family annihilation,” a crime typically carried out by a man against multiple family members.
