Leah Stewart has spoken out about the split-second choice that saved her life during a shark attack off a Sydney beach.
Stewart, 34, was swimming roughly 100 feet from shore at Coogee Beach on June 13 when she came face-to-face with what authorities suspect was a great white shark. The mother of a young daughter named August ultimately lost her left arm in the encounter, but her quick thinking prevented a far worse outcome.
In a harrowing interview with Australia’s 60 Minutes set to air this Sunday, Stewart recounted the terrifying moment the predator closed in. “It got to the point where it was about 30 centimeters from my face and it sort of started opening its mouth,” she told the program.
“I’m like, I’ve got to try and punch it. I’ve got to try and push it away or else it’s going to bite my head off,” Stewart continued. She faced an impossible calculation with milliseconds to act.
“And in that moment I thought, well, which limb am I willing to lose? I’m right-handed. So I decided, let’s do a left hook,” she shared. That deliberate choice to offer her non-dominant arm likely spared her head and torso from the shark’s jaws.
The attack at the iconic eastern Sydney beach prompted emergency responses and renewed debate about shark mitigation measures along Australia’s coastline. Coogee Beach, a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, was closed following the incident as authorities assessed the threat.
