Cher experienced an awkward moment during the announcement of this year’s Record of the Year winner.
The music icon was given the responsibility of revealing the winner of one of the night’s most prestigious awards, but the process did not go as planned.
Initially, the ‘Believe’ singer was looking at a teleprompter, expecting it to display the winner’s name, only to find out it was in the envelope she held. Upon opening the envelope, she mistakenly announced the wrong name.
“Oh! They told me it was going to be on the prompter,” Cher remarked as the audience chuckled.
She then announced Luther Vandross as the winner of this year’s Record of the Year, despite the fact that he had passed away 20 years prior.

The camera then cut to the actual winner, Kendrick Lamar, as Cher quickly corrected herself.
The confusion arose because the winning song was titled ‘luther’. SZA featured on the track, which samples Vandross’ song, ‘If This World Were Mine’.
When the winners approached the stage to accept the award, Cher began to apologize profusely to everyone.
