Movie up for Oscars Best Picture ‘deserved twice as many nominations’ and is available to watch for free

One of this year’s Best Picture contenders — and a genuine crowd-pleaser — can be streamed for free right now.

As awards season heats up, it’s not unusual for nominated films to suddenly become difficult to track down — or to end up locked behind pricey rental fees (looking at you, Marty Supreme).

That said, several Oscar-nominated titles are still available to stream ahead of Sunday’s ceremony.

This year’s Best Picture lineup includes: Bugonia, Frankenstein, F1, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, Sinners, and Train Dreams.

There’s no clear consensus yet on which film will take the night’s top prize. Deadline and The Los Angeles Times are backing One Battle After Another, while Variety is predicting a win for Sinners.

Even so, the outlet has argued that The Secret Agent is the one that truly deserves the win — a view echoed by plenty of fans. Some have also said the film, starring Narcos actor Wagner Moura, should have picked up more nominations overall.

The Secret Agent should totally win the Best Picture Oscar. It shouldn’t even be close. What a masterpiece… and I loved a lot of the others,” somebody said on Twitter.

“I think The Secret Agent might win Best Picture at the Oscars,” said another.

A third added: “I want Secret Agent to win the most but Sinners will probably win, which is also an incredible movie.”

Pointing to its relatively limited recognition, another viewer wrote: “The Secret Agent deserved twice as many Oscar nominations as it received.”

If you haven’t watched it yet, there’s good news: the acclaimed film is currently streaming on Hulu. It arrived on the service on March 1, landing just ahead of the Oscars.

IMDb’s synopsis says: “In 1977, a technology expert flees from a mysterious past and returns to his hometown of Recife in search of peace. He soon realizes that the city is far from being the refuge he seeks.”

Alongside its Best Picture nomination, Moura is also in the running for Best Actor, facing competition from Timothée Chalamet, Michael B. Jordan, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Ethan Hawke.

Other 2026 Oscar-nominated films you can stream for free include Frankenstein and Train Dreams (Netflix), One Battle After Another and Sinners (HBO Max), Hamnet (Peacock), and F1 (Apple TV).
