Netflix viewers have expressed their disappointment with the concluding season of a popular series, citing one major letdown they all seem to agree on.
Although The Last of Us is captivating audiences elsewhere, a particular show on Netflix is still pulling viewers back to the platform.
The popular psychological thriller debuted on Netflix in 2018, and its fifth and final season was released last week.
The series in question is You, which has kept fans engaged with the story of serial killer Joe Goldberg, portrayed by Penn Badgley.
“Every season they manage to find new space to make it interesting and relevant,” Badgley shared with Tudum.
“And this season, I think somehow coming back to where it started allowed for it to just become grounded in the way that it needs to also have this kind of spectacular finish,” Badgley continued.
Co-showrunners and executive producers Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo commented: “It’s so rare that you’re afforded the opportunity to do five seasons of a show, let alone complete the story — while also bringing your character and the production back to where it all began.
“It was truly a unicorn experience and an absolute career highlight for both of us,” they added.
While season five of You reintroduces familiar characters and storylines, many fans feel the series finale falls short.
Be aware, spoilers for You season five are ahead.
Fans were particularly let down that it was Bronte (Madeline Kathryn Brewer), a new character, who ultimately led to Joe’s downfall, rather than someone more beloved by fans.
“So the final season of You consists of some random a** girl wrapping up Joe’s storyline and no Ellie or Love cameo,” one Twitter user expressed.
Another chimed in: “Finished You and wtf some random ass lady just end Joe’s story up when it should have been Love Quinn.”
Given Love Quinn’s demise in season three, it would have been challenging for You to alter this outcome, though Victoria Pedretti’s character did make an appearance in a dream sequence in season four.
As for Ellie Alves, her absence can likely be attributed to Jenna Ortega’s busy schedule.
Despite some fans’ dissatisfaction with season five, the new episodes bring the captivating You storyline to a conclusion.
“We always said that we would stop after five and [that], in a perfect world, we would bring Joe back home to New York,” executive producer Foley mentioned.
“We loved the idea of things coming full circle for him. We’re excited by the fact that Joe came home as such a different person than [who] we saw in Season 1. At the core of our final story for Joe is this dichotomy of the old and the new,” he explained.
