The series is adapted from novels by Tony Hillerman and features an impressive lineup of producers, including George R.R. Martin and the iconic Robert Redford.

Set in Arizona during the 1970s, the story revolves around the Navajo nation and tribal police detective Joe Leaphorn.

Zahn McClarnon stars as Joe Leaphorn, joined by Jessica Matten and Kiowa Gordon, who form part of the local police force investigating a series of brutal murders.

The show, titled Dark Winds, boasts a predominantly indigenous cast (95 percent according to the Los Angeles Times) and a similarly representative production crew.

The show’s success and rave reviews have already secured a third season.

Dark Winds not only holds a perfect 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes for both of its seasons but also an impressive 7.7 rating on IMDb.

IndieWire awarded the show an A, with Kristen Lopez stating: “Dark Winds may seem similar to other detective shows but it’s more than that.

“With well-written and sharply defined characters, plus an invigorating and tightly wound story, it’ll be hard to wait a week for each episode to drop.”

Judy Berman of TIME Magazine remarked: “Gripping, gorgeously shot and propelled by superb performances, Dark Winds is a very good show that also happens to be very important.”

Clint Worthington of RogerEbert.com added: “A heartfelt and accomplished thriller that doubles as a proof of concept for Camel Rock Studios’ ability to tell Native stories in popular television genres.”

One IMDb reviewer rated the show 10/10 and said it was “as good as television gets.”

They elaborated: “This adaptation of Hillerman’s characters works at every level one expects from really good television.

“The writing, acting, editing and cinematography all deserve recognition. The Dine world experience vividly, honestly and kindly created, within a ‘thriller’ police format makes a compelling series. A great binge.”
