A new Netflix miniseries featuring Steve Carell and Tina Fey has become an instant hit, being described by viewers as a ‘masterpiece.’ Fans have been raving about the show, stating that it has “no business being this funny.”
It’s been 15 years since Carell and Fey last shared the screen, their previous collaboration being the 2010 film Date Night. The duo has reunited, and their on-screen chemistry is as vibrant as ever.
This eight-episode series was co-written and produced by Fey, in collaboration with Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield.
In an interview with Netflix, Fey, now 54, expressed her hopes for the audience: “I hope audiences feel like they are inside a big sweater with us, and also having a dinner party with us, and I hope that any of the joy and warmth that we all feel for each other all transfers to them, and that we are a comfort and provide some laughs for them in their home.”
The miniseries, titled Four Seasons, follows the story of six friends who are in relationships. However, one of these relationships is on the verge of breaking down during what is supposed to be a relaxing getaway.
Rather than forsaking future vacations together, the group decides to continue their trips, one for each season: winter, spring, summer, and fall.
The plot thickens when one of the divorced members introduces a much younger partner on subsequent trips, leading to unexpected chaos.
Carell shared his thoughts on the show with Netflix: “It feels lived-in, and I attribute that to the writing and the casting of it, too. It feels like these people have existed in each other’s lives for a long time. There’s a code, there’s an unspoken relationship that entwines all of them, and they speak the same language to each other. There’s a shorthand, and it’s funny.”
The first two episodes were filmed at various locations in upstate New York, set at the home of characters Nick and Anne, portrayed by Carell and Kerri Kenney, respectively.
Locations such as Fishkill, Newburg, and Cold Spring are featured.
The subsequent two episodes, three and four, were shot in the picturesque setting of Puerto Rico.
Episodes five and six were filmed at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, with the final two episodes returning to upstate New York.
Fey explained the choice of filming locations to Netflix: “New York is a beautiful and magical state. It’s a really, really beautiful place to get these four seasons.”
Fans have taken to Twitter to express their admiration for the show. One tweet reads: “#TheFourSeasons was incredible! Great cast, great script, great acting, unexpected plot twists, 10/10 – zero notes.”
Another fan commented: “#TheFourSeasons has no business being this funny, reminds of old school sitcoms. great cast, dynamic twists and a lot more heart than initially anticipated.”
A third viewer remarked: “I think more people need to be talking about the four seasons because this show is a masterpiece #TheFourSeasons”
Additionally, a social media user posted: “The best series I’ve seen all year. Every episode is like a warm hug and a punch to the gut – in the best way.”
Previously, Fey starred with Carell in Date Night and has been a creative force behind the renowned 30 Rock. She also starred in Sisters alongside Amy Poehler. Her impressive portfolio includes 182 episodes of Saturday Night Live, 52 episodes of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt— a show she co-created— and writing the iconic Mean Girls, earning her a legendary status in the industry.
