Netflix subscribers are expressing their dissatisfaction with the conclusion of one of its longtime shows, collectively deciding to ‘pretend it never existed’.
When a popular TV series concludes, fans often feel disappointed about no longer seeing their favorite characters.
Once they move past that initial disappointment, most fans hope for a memorable ending that honors the years of storytelling.
However, that ideal conclusion doesn’t always happen. Just ask Game of Thrones fans about their thoughts on the finale.
The Umbrella Academy, another series with a dedicated following, officially concluded with its fourth season.
Showrunner Steve Blackman confirmed this prior to the release of the latest season on Netflix last week.
He stated, “I’m so excited that the incredibly loyal fans of The Umbrella Academy will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings’ journey we began five years ago.”
He added, “But before we get to that conclusion, we’ve got an amazing story ahead for season four, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minutes.”
All episodes of season four for The Umbrella Academy were released simultaneously, allowing fans to binge-watch if they wish.
The final season featured the returning cast, including Elliot Page, Aidan Gallagher, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, David Castañeda, Tom Hopper, and Justin H Min, and depicted the family powerless and stranded in a new dimension with their father unexpectedly alive.
While season four holds a 59 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score is a mere 17 percent.
One fan on Twitter remarked that season four ‘will go down as one of the most disappointing show endings in history’.
Another fan described the ending of The Umbrella Academy as the ‘worst final season’ alongside Game of Thrones.
One more fan commented, “So all of us brellies have a mutual agreement to pretend season 4 NEVER existed right? 🤝 it was just a collective nightmare and it wasn’t real! #theumbrellaacademy ended on season 3 and that’s it, period.”
Before the release of season four, showrunner Blackman faced accusations of toxic behavior on the set.
According to a report by Rolling Stone, twelve staffers on The Umbrella Academy accused Blackman of creating a ‘toxic work environment’ marked by ‘bullying and sexism’.
Representatives for Blackman denied the allegations, calling them ‘entirely untrue’.
They stated, “These allegations from a handful of disgruntled employees are completely false and outrageous, and in no way reflect the collaborative, respectful, and successful working environment Mr. Blackman has cultivated. The LADbible Group has previously reached out to Netflix for comment.
