Netflix viewers have only days remaining to see one of the ‘greatest films ever’ before it’s removed

Fans are flocking to Netflix to catch a rewatch of what many consider one of the ‘best movies ever’ before it exits the platform.

Currently, Netflix is offering a range of top-rated films, including the seventh season of Black Mirror, The Life List, and Alpha.

However, many viewers are eager to see a 2016 action thriller film before it leaves, featuring the renowned actor Mark Wahlberg alongside Kevin Bacon, John Goodman, J.K. Simmons, and Michelle Monaghan.

This film tells the gripping true story of the Boston Marathon Bombing, a real terrorist attack in the US that occurred in 2013.

On April 15, 12 years ago, two brothers executed a devastating attack by planting and detonating homemade bombs near the race’s finish line.

The explosions resulted in the deaths of three people and left hundreds injured, with more than a dozen losing limbs.

The annual marathon attracts approximately 30,000 runners and over 500,000 spectators, stretching from Hopkinton to Copley Square, traditionally held on Patriots’ Day, the third Monday of April.

This tragic event has inspired multiple on-screen adaptations, including Netflix’s 2023 documentary, American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing.

Prior to the documentary’s release, the movie Patriots Day, directed by Emmy-nominated Peter Berg and based on the non-fiction book Boston Strong by Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge, depicted the events of that fateful day.

The film maintains an impressive 80 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences commending it as a ‘solidly crafted tribute to the heroes’ of the tragic event.

The intense drama follows Sergeant Tommy Saunders, portrayed by Wahlberg, as he pursues the perpetrators of the attack.

Patriots Day was recognized by the National Board of Review as one of the top 10 films of 2016, a sentiment echoed by many viewers.

With just six days left for Netflix subscribers to view the film, which departs the platform on Tuesday, April 29, now might be the time to see what everyone is talking about.

One Twitter user commented: “Finally watching Patriots Day and I don’t think I’ve cried through an entire movie like this in years??”

Another viewer stated, “Just watched Patriots Day… man what a great movie.”

A third viewer added, “Patriots Day highkey a fire movie.”

On Reddit, one fan shared their emotional reaction, stating they ended up ‘sobbing’ by the end.

They wrote, “This film deserves way more attention. It’s surprisingly not as ‘jingoistic’ as I thought it would be. And Wahlberg actually gives one of his best performances.”

The viewer continued, “This whole movie is a rollercoaster. Such a tragedy and scary as hell. But the editing, direction, and acting are all impeccable.”

Another fan remarked, “I feel this is not just Wahlberg’s best film in a decade, but the filmmaker Peter Berg’s best ever.

“Genuinely a great film and fantastic example of merging dramatized recreations of events with the real-life footage via those security cameras in the gas stations, etc.

“And of course Wahlberg’s character is fictional but using him as a vehicle in which to tell the story is brilliant. I love this movie.”

Patriots Day remains available for streaming on Netflix until Tuesday, April 29.
