Move aside Die Hard, because there’s a new holiday thriller capturing the attention of Netflix viewers.
The similarities between the Bruce Willis Christmas classic (yes, it’s a Christmas film, no debate needed!) and Netflix’s latest hit have fans buzzing.
Featuring actors Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman, audiences have rated it a perfect ’10/10′ and some have already watched it multiple times.
This is impressive, given that it was released on the streaming service on December 13.
Titled Carry-On, the film is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, known for The Shallows. Like the iconic John McClane movie, this one is set on Christmas Eve.
In Carry-On, Rocketman actor Egerton takes on the role of Ethan Kopek, a transportation security agent (TSA).
He becomes ensnared in a dangerous plot when Bateman’s enigmatic character, Traveler, blackmails him.
Traveler demands Ethan’s help to smuggle hazardous items onto a Christmas flight, using threats to ensure compliance.
Taron praised his co-star and the unique filming process, sharing with ScreenRant: “Jason was amazing. He did a couple of days with me where he actually provided the voice, and he was there recording live with me, and that was a real luxury. The rest of the time I recorded it with an actor.”
The official Netflix description of Carry-On states: “A crowded airport. A dangerous suitcase. A mysterious criminal mastermind.”
It further adds: “On Christmas Eve, a security officer faces the ultimate travel nightmare.”
The film has already garnered an 86 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with fans calling it ‘outstanding’.
One viewer shared a photo of the film on the Netflix Bangers Facebook group, stating: “Definitely a 10/10… have you guys seen this movie yet?”
“It’s like Die Hard but with a TSA agent, really enjoyed it!” another user commented.
“Best movie I’ve seen on Netflix for a long time!” someone else exclaimed.
“Outstanding! A 10!” praised one viewer, while another Twitter user is hoping for a sequel.
“Very, very well done! Definitely gives me the Die Hard vibes and that’s an absolute compliment. Possibly room for another one?” they pondered hopefully.
They aren’t the only ones hoping for a sequel; another fan suggested: “Cool movie, reminds me of a 90’s action movie. Really liked it, hope there is a second next year. And yes for me it’s like Die Hard an xmas movie.”
The film also features Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, and Logan Marshall-Green.
Initially penned by TJ Fixman, the movie was meant to be the inaugural release under Netflix’s deal with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners.
Although its release was postponed due to script revisions, the positive response from fans suggests the wait was justified.
Carry-On is available to stream on Netflix now.
