Nicole Kidman seemed to make a subtle jab at famous director Martin Scorsese while discussing her future collaboration aspirations in the film industry.
With a career spanning over 40 years, Kidman has teamed up with a diverse array of filmmakers and actors, including Zac Efron, Jason Momoa, Meryl Streep, and Reese Witherspoon. However, she also touched upon those she hasn’t yet had the opportunity to work with.
These remarks came during an interview with Vanity Fair while Kidman prepares for her role in the upcoming thriller Babygirl. She was recently honored with the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award this year.
In her acceptance speech, Kidman mentioned directors she’s collaborated with in the past, including Stanley Kubrick, Jane Campion, Gus Van Sant, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Sofia Coppola, among others.
During her recent interview, Kidman was asked: “I wanted to ask you about your AFI tribute and specifically that astonishing list of directors you’ve collaborated with. Is there anyone you have your eye on who you haven’t worked with and want to?”
Her response appeared to call out Scorsese, known for films such as Killers of the Flower Moon, The Irishman, and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Kidman remarked: “I’ve always said I want to work with [Martin] Scorsese, if he does a film with women.”
While Scorsese’s films do include female characters, many of his well-known works feature men in lead roles. The director frequently collaborates with actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Al Pacino. However, he has previously directed women-led films, such as 1974’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
Moreover, his recent film, Killers of the Flower Moon, featured Lily Gladstone in a prominent role, garnering her a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination.
After mentioning Scorsese, Kidman continued by expressing interest in working with directors like Kathryn Bigelow, Spike Jonze, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Michael Haneke.
She stated: “And there’s a whole slew of new up-and-coming directors – there’s so many, and I’m always open to the discovery of new people. And I find it really exciting when you go, Here’s someone that’s so experienced and has been working and working, but they’ve now really hit their stride.”
