What was intended as a display of global cooperation and diplomacy turned into an awkward spectacle for Keir Starmer during a peace summit in Egypt, as highlighted by online reactions.
The gathering of international leaders in Sharm el-Sheikh marked the announcement of what Donald Trump described as a ‘historic agreement’ aimed at resolving the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Cameras were rolling, capturing what many hoped would be a memorable moment of unity. However, for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the event did not unfold as expected, adding to his earlier uncomfortable interaction with Trump in July.
Starmer made the trip to Egypt to attend the signing of Trump’s much-publicized Middle East peace deal, with intentions of showcasing Britain’s support for the effort. Yet, instead of a diplomatic triumph, the event turned into a somewhat humiliating experience on the world stage.
Trump, arriving fashionably late after meeting with freed hostages in Israel, managed to ignite social media with what followed.
During Trump’s extended speech, he began inviting countries alphabetically to join him on stage, starting with Paraguay and Norway, leaving Starmer standing quietly in the background. Eventually, Trump turned and asked, “Where is the United Kingdom? Come here,” prompting Starmer to raise his hand and approach.
Attempting to lighten the mood, Starmer joked, “Behind you as usual.”
The two shook hands, with Trump inquiring, “Is everything going good?” to which Starmer responded, “Very good.”
In a moment that quickly went viral, Trump then turned away and continued speaking. With no invitation to share remarks, Starmer returned to his place among other world leaders as cameras continued recording. The interaction rapidly spread online, attracting a range of commentary.
One user on X (formerly Twitter) remarked: “I’ve lost count of how many times Trump has humiliated Starmer this year, but this is by far the best. After listing a multitude of countries, the only person he invites to the podium is Starmer – and then brushes him off and sends him packing. Brutal.”
Another commented: “President Trump pretty much forgot that Keir Starmer was there, he then thought he was going to speak, the look on his face before he walked back. He did nothing and deserved no praise.”
Afterwards, Starmer tried to paint a more favorable picture by posting the handshake photo online with the caption: “President Trump, this is your achievement. I thank you for your tireless efforts to deliver this moment. The UK stands ready to support a full implementation of the peace plan.”
