A Prime Video series starring Olivia Colman has garnered high praise, being described as ‘one of the best comedies of our generation.’
However, if you expect a lighthearted experience, you might want to reconsider…
Colman is currently featured alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in the dark romantic comedy, The Roses, a retelling of Danny DeVito’s 1989 film The War of the Roses.
The two play a seemingly ideal married couple whose lives spiral into a bitter yet humorous battle as romance gives way to resentment.
The Roses also includes appearances by well-known actors such as Andy Samberg from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Kate McKinnon from Saturday Night Live, and Allison Janney from I, Tonya.
However, Colman also starred in an acclaimed Amazon Prime Video series that aired for two seasons from 2016 to 2019.
This Emmy-winning show boasts a perfect 100 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes and remains a re-watch favorite.
Created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, this British series follows the life of a witty but troubled woman in her early 30s living in London.
She presents a facade of confidence, humor, and promiscuity, yet her wit serves as a defense against profound loneliness and unresolved grief.
As she struggles to keep her small cafe in business and deal with tense family relationships, she is also coping with the loss of her best friend, Boo.
Frequently breaking the fourth wall, the series blends raw honesty with sharp humor, inviting viewers to join the journey.
The exceptional cast includes Brett Gelman from Stranger Things, Andrew Scott from Ripley, Bill Paterson from Good Omens, and Fiona Shaw from Harry Potter.
The series, known as Fleabag, has been lauded as ‘clever and viciously funny’ by Rotten Tomatoes critics, who awarded both of its seasons a flawless 100 per cent.
“Fleabag is a touching, wildly inventive comedy about a complicated young woman navigating the aftermath of trauma,” states their consensus.
Fans have rated the show with an average score of 93 per cent, with one describing it as ‘Fresh, rebellious and thought-provoking.’
“Genius! The wittiest series I have seen in a long time,” another fan commented.
“This show is perfection,” agreed another viewer, while a third remarked: “A comedy must see! Easily one of the best comedies of our generation.”
Despite its classification as a comedy, some argue that the series is actually a ‘rollercoaster of emotions.’
Fleabag triumphed at the 2019 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning six awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actress, Writing, Directing, Editing, and Casting.
The show also received top accolades at the 2020 Golden Globes, securing Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy and Best Actress in a TV Series – Musical or Comedy for Waller‑Bridge.
Both seasons of Fleabag are currently available for streaming on Prime Video in the US and UK, and British viewers can also access it through BBC iPlayer.
