Julie Hanway Molina was arrested Thursday morning when FBI agents surrounded her Aliso Viejo home and ordered her to surrender.
Molina, 56, emerged from her two-story suburban house minutes later wearing a look of shock as officers in flak jackets placed her in handcuffs and loaded her into a black sedan. The federal takedown came after a grand jury returned a four-count wire fraud indictment on Sept. 2 alleging she stole more than $411,000 from a high school football nonprofit.
The indictment identifies the defendant only as treasurer of an Orange County volunteer group established to promote a high school football program. Public sources in court documents point to the Wolverines Football Club, which funds the football team at Aliso Niguel High School in the Capistrano Unified School District. The school, located on Wolverine Way, serves grades 9 through 12 from Aliso Viejo and Laguna Niguel.
Federal prosecutors say Molina exploited her financial access beginning around 2023 and continuing through approximately November 2025. Her duties included co-signing checks, making approved disbursements, receiving dues, maintaining expenditure records, and providing financial statements to the board.
“This defendant was entrusted by the community with safeguarding money raised for young adults. She violated that trust and is now a charged felon,” said Bill Essayli, the top federal prosecutor in Los Angeles, in a statement to The California Post. “Our prosecutors are committed to holding her fully accountable, including seeking a federal prison sentence.”
The indictment alleges Molina diverted funds without the nonprofit’s knowledge or authorization, with some money going toward her personal mortgage and credit card expenses. In June 2023, she allegedly wired approximately $131,523 from the organization’s Laguna Hills bank account through Federal Reserve facilities in New Jersey and Texas to a Santa Ana account, using it to pay the delinquent balance on her home mortgage.
Prosecutors also claim Molina attempted to cover her tracks by emailing board members false treasurer reports that omitted the alleged misappropriation.
The case carries significant financial stakes beyond prison time. The indictment lists a $1.4 million home on Poplar Drive in Aliso Viejo among properties the government could seek to forfeit, along with other assets traceable to the alleged offenses. If the property itself cannot be seized, prosecutors are pursuing a money judgment equal to its value, with substitute property provisions also included.
Molina’s role with the football organization was publicly documented before the federal case emerged. In 2024, she was identified as the football club’s treasurer in connection with Senior Night, held before the Sept. 20 game at Aliso Niguel High School.
“This is a special occasion for us to celebrate,” Molina said at the time. “It can be very emotional, especially for the mothers seeing their kids all grown up.”
Aliso Niguel’s sports teams, known as the Wolverines, have deep community roots. The varsity football squad went undefeated and captured the CIF-SS Division VIII championship in 1996. The current season record stands at 0-3.
If convicted, Molina faces a statutory maximum of 20 years in federal prison for each of the four counts. The indictment’s allegations remain unproven unless and until established in court.
Molina is expected to make her initial appearance and be arraigned Monday in United States District Court in Santa Ana.
