Orlando Bloom has opened up about filming an intimate threesome scene with real-life sisters Rooney and Kate Mara.
The “Lord of the Rings” star, 49, discussed the moment while presenting “Bucking Fastard” at the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain alongside director Werner Herzog, 84. Bloom plays Gareth Mulroney, a man caught between twin sisters Joan and Jean Holbrooke, portrayed by Rooney, 41, and Kate, 43, respectively.

Bloom emphasized the unexpected tenderness he found in the material. “[There is] such simplicity to the characters and [their] carnal desires, but also an innocence to the sisters,” he said. He noted that his character shares that vulnerability: “My character, the ‘Bucking Fastard,’ is sensitive too, and he’s quite quickly out of his depth in some ways.”

The actor described the threesome as a collaborative creation among the three performers. He said the scene was a “very sincere sort of moment” that he, Rooney and Kate built together.

Herzog took a hands-off approach to directing the intimate sequence. He recalled telling Bloom, “You are in bed, and you have two women in your arms. How you deal with it, I cannot give instructions.” The German filmmaker described the finished scene as “beautiful,” adding that it has “such charm and depth.” He explained that there are times when a director “has to step back.”

“Bucking Fastard” is loosely based on the lives of identical twin sisters Freda and Greta Chaplin, per IMDb. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 3, with all three stars walking the red carpet together. Rooney wore Louis Vuitton, Kate donned Armani Privé, and Bloom stepped out in Zegna.

Bloom’s personal life has drawn recent attention as well. He was photographed vacationing with his daughter, Daisy Dove, and an unidentified woman in photos he shared on Instagram on Sept. 12. He did not reveal the woman’s identity. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor was last romantically linked to Swiss model Luisa Laemmel, 28, after the pair was spotted leaving the Super Bowl together in February.

Bloom shares Daisy Dove, 6, with his ex-fiancée, Katy Perry. Perry confirmed their split in 2025 after nearly a decade together.

The San Sebastián Film Festival presentation marks another stop in the film’s festival run following its Venice debut.
