Over $1m collected for James Van Der Beek’s family after medical expenses ‘drained their funds’

A substantial amount of money has been raised for James Van Der Beek’s family less than a day after it was announced that the Dawson’s Creek star had passed away.

The announcement of Van Der Beek’s death at the age of 48 was made by his family on Instagram on February 11, following his battle with colorectal cancer.

Alongside a photograph of the actor, the family shared: “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come.”

The family also requested privacy during this challenging time.

Van Der Beek was diagnosed with cancer in August 2023, though he only made this public in November 2024. He revealed his condition earlier than planned due to a tabloid allegedly learning about his diagnosis and threatening to publish the story.

The costs related to Van Der Beek’s cancer treatment before his death have reportedly left his family under significant financial pressure.

In response, a friend initiated a GoFundMe campaign to aid them, and within a short period, over $1,000,000 had been collected.

The description on the fundraising page, written by ‘Jason K’, states: “James Van Der Beek was a beloved husband, father, and friend who touched the lives of everyone around him. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, James passed away on February 11, 2026 leaving behind his devoted wife, Kimberly, and their six wonderful children.”

“Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care.”

The creator of the page further mentioned that the actor’s wife and children are ‘facing an uncertain future’.

“The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds,” it was explained.

“They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time.

“The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead.”
