A California school-bus standoff spiraled into chaos after parents arrived demanding their children be released, with one allegedly breaking the bus door and students climbing through windows to escape.
The wild scene unfolded Monday along Highway 49 in Calaveras County when students were reportedly kept aboard for about an hour, according to local reports. The footage shows one child squeezing through a window to escape, followed later by a parent climbing through a window and confronting the driver.
One 12-year-old aboard the bus said kids were initially screaming and excited about getting off. “Everybody was screaming and stuff because they were excited to get off the bus,” the student said. The child said the trouble began after the bus stopped and another child climbed through a window. “That’s when the bus driver was like, ‘Sit down, roll up the windows,'” they continued. The driver told the children they would need to wait for law enforcement before leaving, according to the student.
That decision enraged some parents who arrived at the scene after their children called them from the bus. Nichole Wellington said her son was frightened, prompting her to drive to the bus and demand that he be released.
“I went right to the door and I was like, ‘Dude, open the door. Let me have my kid.’ And he’s like, ‘I’m not doing that,'” Wellington said. She eventually told her son to climb through a window to get out.
“If he would have handled that situation and gave the parents their kids that were there. I think it probably would have went a little bit differently than it did,” Wellington told the station.
But another mother, Rebecca Glover, said she took the opposite approach when she arrived. Her two children were on the bus, but she told them to stay put.
“There was not just one child they had to think of,” Glover said. “They had to think of every single child on that bus at that time.”
The situation escalated when one parent allegedly struck the bus door, shattering its glass. “During the incident, the parent struck the bus door, breaking the glass. The parent was ultimately taken into custody at the school district’s request for vandalism,” the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies said several students were also reported to have exited through open windows, but warned they should only be used as exits during emergencies. “School bus safety rules exist to protect students and should be followed by both students and parents,” the sheriff’s office added.
Calaveras Unified Superintendent Kassie Meeks said the incident began with concerns over student behavior and ultimately required police intervention.
In the viral moment that preceded the parent confrontation, the bus had stopped along Highway 49 and at least one child had already climbed through a window before the driver ordered students to sit down and roll up the windows. The driver then insisted the children wait for law enforcement, a decision that stretched the standoff to roughly an hour and allowed time for multiple parents to arrive at the scene.
The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the vandalism arrest as district officials review bus safety protocols.
