A male assailant struck Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, with a hammer at the couple’s home in San Francisco.
Pelosi, 82, was hospitalized but is expected to recover well, according to the Democratic Speaker’s Office.
The US Capitol Police issued a statement claiming they support the FBI and the San Francisco Police Department “with a joint investigation” into the break-in at Pelosi’s California home.
According to the statement, special agents from the USCP’s California Field Office “quickly arrived on scene, while a team of investigators from the Department’s Threat Assessment Section was simultaneously dispatched from the East Coast to assist the FBI and the San Francisco Police with a joint investigation.”
Nancy Pelosi’s spokesperson, Drew Hammill, said the assailant is in custody, and a motive is being probed. According to a spokeswoman, the speaker was in Washington at the time of the incident.
“The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at thi time,” Hammill said in his statement.
According to two people acquainted with the early circumstances of the event, the assailant entered the Pelosi household through the rear door.
According to one person acquainted with the procedure, there would have been no security presence at the property while Speaker Pelosi was abroad.
According to two law enforcement sources, there may be footage that US Capitol Police and law enforcement may check because the residence has security cameras.
According to the White House, President Joe Biden met with Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“The President is praying for Paul Pelosi and Speaker Pelosi’s whole family. This morning he called Speaker Pelosi to express his support after this horrible attack,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.
She continued: “He is also very glad that a full recovery is expected. The President continues to condemn all violence, and asks that the family’s desire for privacy be respected.”
