When Penn State student Mary Krupa was a freshman, she noticed some students feeding squirrels under a tree. A lifelong animal lover, Mary figured she could probably feed them, too. Soon, she realized just how friendly the campus squirrels were.

“When I saw that the squirrels here are really so friendly to let you touch them, I figured, hmm, well if the squirrel lets me touch it, maybe I can put a little hat on it.”
That’s the kind of logic we can get behind, Mary.
She started off with just hats, using peanuts to coax the squirrels.
“I had a tiny doll hat with me and tried it. Amazingly she sat there with it on long enough for me to take a picture. It was so cute,” Mary said.
Soon, she graduated to using props. She is able to get the squirrels to hold props by putting peanut butter on them.
Apparently, squirrels really, really like peanut butter.
Mary’s model, a squirrel named “Sneezy”, is actually several different animals.
“Whenever I find one that’s willing to cooperate and it lets me take pictures, then that one is basically Sneezy for the day,” explains Krupa.
