People are just discovering that Gen Z has redefined ‘first base’

Recently, people online have been surprised to learn that Generation Z has redefined the concept of what ‘first base’ traditionally meant.

Gen Z has a reputation for redefining cultural norms, whether it’s through new memes or shifting travel trends. This generational shift also extends to the realm of dating and relationships, with ‘first base’ taking on a new meaning according to them.

In the past, the term was commonly used in dating contexts, often prompting conversations about which ‘base’ someone had reached after a date. Traditionally, ‘first base’ stood for a kiss, with ‘second’ and ‘third base’ involving more intimate activities.

However, the definition has evolved, and for Gen Z in 2025, ‘first base’ now reportedly refers to oral sex.

Annabelle Knight, a sex and relationship expert with Lovehoney, notes that this shift is reflective of Gen Z’s approach to sex.

According to her statement in the Metro, “Many young people today tend to have a much more open, nuanced view of sex and pleasure – oral sex, for instance, is arguably seen as less intimate than it once was, and that’s partly down to the influence of pop culture, porn, and how we discuss sex more freely online.”

“Traditionally, ‘first base’ was kissing, ‘second’ was touching above the waist, and so on, but younger generations don’t always play by that rulebook anymore,” Knight elaborated.

She further remarked, “These days, sex and intimacy aren’t linear – there’s less emphasis on ticking off the bases in order, and much more focus on what feels right in the moment.”

Lucy Rowett, another sex coach, discussed this in The i Paper, noting that while younger generations are more progressive in their views on sex and relationships, there is also a sense of confusion among Gen Z.

The conversation about oral sex occurring after a first date has gained momentum on platforms like Reddit, where a 24-year-old mentioned its normalization in such early encounters.

On TikTok, user @laura.lmkk added to the discussion, suggesting it’s common for Gen Z to engage in oral sex shortly after meeting someone new.

She stated, “Our generation thinks it’s weird to bring flowers on the first date, but getting intimate on the first date is normal.”
