For ages, the design of women’s underwear has included an enigma that many are only now beginning to understand – the function of the additional fabric layer in their garments.
After wearing underwear since infancy, I suspect I’m not alone in being unaware of the reason behind the extra pouch sewn into the crotch area. Is it meant for storing essentials like tampons or lipstick? Or is it for added comfort when sitting down?
Previously, this perplexing feature was a secret that seemed answerable only by the creators of underwear, prompting many to turn to social media for explanations.
A curious individual on X posed the question: “I’ve always wondered why underwear has these holes???”
Another user chimed in: “Don’t listen to the people saying it’s for ‘reinforcement’ or some rubbish.”
The actual reason, however, might surprise many.
No matter the style—thong, G-string, Brazilian, panties, or briefs—each features this little pocket, known as a gusset.
Dispelling any distaste for the name, which might evoke images of plumbing, the gusset is typically made from cotton and serves a critical role in maintaining hygiene.

An online user accurately described its purpose: “The extra piece of fabric is called a gusset, and it’s there to reinforce the crotch area. It makes the piece more durable and stops moisture from seeping through. You could topstitch so there’s no hole, but it’s not really necessary and can cause irritation.”
According to Cheeky Wipes, the gusset serves multiple functions.
They explain that a gusset helps keep the wearer cool, minimizes sweating, and prevents vaginal discharge from damaging outer clothing. It also allows the vulva to breathe.
Leonisa, an underwear brand, notes that while men’s underwear can feature gussets, they are primarily found in women’s garments. “Gussets can be found in just about every type of underwear for women, from boy-shorts to bikini panties to thongs,” Leonisa’s website explains.
“The panty gusset serves several purposes. For one, the extra layer of fabric reinforces the underwear in the crotch area, which is often the narrowest part of the underwear,” the site states. “This prolongs the life of the underwear and helps it to last longer. The extra layer of fabric also helps catch discharge, sweat, and other elements, keeping you cool and dry as you go about your day.”
Quite enlightening, isn’t it?
