When stars join a major franchise, they usually remember their involvement, but in Gwyneth Paltrow’s case, she was surprised to find out she had roles in seven Marvel movies.
Paltrow, a longstanding figure in the film industry, only recently recognized her extensive participation in Marvel films.
During an interview with Vanity Fair, Paltrow was visibly astonished to discover that she portrayed Pepper Potts in seven Marvel productions, including the Iron Man and Avengers series.
This realization came about while she was reviewing clips of her notable roles, during which she realized she had forgotten much of her work.
When the 52-year-old saw a scene from 2008’s Iron Man, where she played the CEO of Stark Industries (later becoming Tony Stark’s love interest), the interviewer questioned: “Did you ever imagine that when you signed on you would end up in seven films?”
Paltrow was momentarily taken aback, questioning the accuracy of what she just heard.
She responded: “That can’t be right. I can’t have been in seven. Is that true?”
Fans were amazed at her forgetfulness regarding her extensive Marvel filmography.
One person commented: “I ❤ how she doesn’t know what films she is in.”
Another admirer stated: “Listen no apologies. I love Gwyneth. and I think she’s charming. I think she’s funny.”
Someone else added: “She knows nothing about the MCU still and I love it. Healthy distance to her job.”
Apparently, Paltrow also forgot her appearance in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.
She explained: “One time I didn’t realize I was in Spider-Man. I was like doing a scene with Robert and Jon Favreau so I thought it was a cameo. They’re like, ‘It’s another…’ Anyway. And it turned out I was in ‘Spider-Man’ and I didn’t even realize.”
Paltrow’s forgetfulness was evident when she appeared on Favreau and chef Roy Choi’s Netflix series The Chef Show in 2019.
“We weren’t in ‘Spider-Man,’” she remarked.
“Yes, we were. You were in ‘Spider-Man,’” Favreau corrected her.
Not only does she lose track of her own films, but she also hasn’t kept up with the ones released after her involvement.
When questioned about a potential appearance in Captain America: Brave New World, she said: “What is that? Oh, no. I don’t think so. I think I would’ve known by now. I may… we’ll see. I don’t know.”
Paltrow explained the reason for her oversight, attributing it to Marvel’s secretive production process.
“They keep it all very top secret, you know. They think they’re the CIA or something over there. That it’s like national secrets. Like who’s doing what and who. That’s why I didn’t know I was in ‘Spider-Man!’ ‘Cause they never said. There were no signs that said ‘Spider-Man’. The script didn’t say ‘Spider-Man’. It’s all a secret,” she elaborated.
In total, Paltrow appeared in Iron Man, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
