Amidst the current economic strains, many people are acutely aware of their food expenses, but it seems the President has a different perspective.
Donald Trump has been accused of misrepresenting the true cost of gas and eggs during a peculiar moment captured on video.
For example, a trip to Walmart for a gallon of whole milk typically costs just under four dollars—a price well-known to regular shoppers.
Gas prices, even at their lowest, are a few dollars per gallon.
This discrepancy is why Trump’s comments have left many astonished.
In the video circulating on X, Trump dismisses a journalist as ‘fake’ when she questions him about the rising costs of living, suggesting that Americans are facing increased grocery and gas expenses.
Trump claimed that gas prices were ‘way down’ in several states, even suggesting they had fallen to ‘$1.98’ per gallon.
However, this statement has been widely challenged.
Online reactions included comments like: “He’s on crack? I just went grocery shopping.”
Another user asked: “I want to know where this 1.98 gas is I just paid 3.15 today.”
He also remarked on the media’s scrutiny regarding the price of eggs: “Before I got here…the press, the fake news like you, the fake news is screaming at me, like about eggs.”
He continued to assert: “The price of groceries are substantially down. The price of eggs. You know, when I came in, [the press] hit me with eggs. I just got there.”
He went on: “They said, you won’t have eggs for Easter, which is coming up. Happy Easter, everybody. And now eggs are all over the place, and the price went down 92% and our Commissioner of Agriculture, Brooke [Rollins], has done a fantastic job.”
Despite his claims of significant decreases in gas, grocery, and oil prices, many viewers disagreed.
As of Thursday, April 17, the average gasoline price nationwide was $3.17 per gallon.
Reports indicated: “No state had an average gas price even close to $1.98 per gallon [as of] Wednesday.”
Data from AAA, referenced by CNN’s chief fact-checker Daniel Dale, showed the average national price was about $3.17 per gallon.
CNN’s Chief White House Correspondent Kaitlan Collins also addressed these discrepancies on X, fact-checking the president’s claims.
White House spokesperson Harrison Fields urged reporters to step out of their ‘big city bubble’ and observe ‘Middle America’ for sub-$2 gas prices, though these figures still do not align.
GasBuddy, a company monitoring gas station prices, confirmed no stations were selling gas for under $2.
The average cost for a dozen eggs is $3.13, down from $8 in early March last year, as per tradingeconomics.com.
When Trump took office, Grade A eggs were priced at $5.81 per dozen, and last month, they reached a record high of $6.23 per dozen, according to the Consumer Price Index reported on April 10.
