Denmark appears to be turning the tables on Donald Trump with a playful response.
Recently, President Trump engaged in a contentious phone conversation with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The two are believed to have discussed the idea of the U.S. purchasing Greenland, a move that was not well received by the Danish government.
Trump has insisted that acquiring the island is crucial.
“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” he wrote on Truth Social.
He went on to say that Greenland is an exceptional place, asserting, “Greenland is an incredible place. The people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it, cherish it, from a very vicious outside World.”
“MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”
In contrast, Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, has expressed unequivocally that the territory is not for sale and will never be.
Following Trump’s contentious proposal, a tongue-in-cheek petition emerged suggesting that Denmark should buy California, a major U.S. state with about 38 million residents.
As of Thursday, February 13, the petition named ‘Let’s Buy California from Trump – Denmark’s Next Big Adventure’ has amassed over 244,000 signatures.
The petition humorously suggests: “Have you ever looked at a map and thought, ‘You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates.’ Well, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make that dream a reality. Let’s buy California from Donald Trump!”
The text continues, emphasizing Denmark’s national interest in obtaining California and even goes so far as to suggest renaming Los Angeles to “Løs Ångeles.”
Civil tech activist Xåvier Dutoit, who is believed to have created the petition, explained his motivation to Newsweek.
Dutoit was inspired after overhearing “a rather annoying discussion of a MAGA-adjacent American that couldn’t quite understand how insane the Greenland proposal is” while at a bar.
To highlight the absurdity of Trump’s suggestion, he launched the viral petition.
The petition ambitiously aims to crowdfund $1 trillion to purchase California, which breaks down to “just 200,000 kroner from every Dane.”
Quite the imaginative proposal, indeed.
