Police speak out as shooting at lake party near Oklahoma City injures at least 10

A lakeside gathering outside Oklahoma City turned into a ‘terrifying situation’ after gunfire erupted, sending at least 10 people to hospital, according to police.

The incident happened on Sunday night (May 3), triggering a major emergency response. Police, the fire department, and highway patrol units were dispatched to the area at about 9pm.

When crews arrived at the lakeside location, they found multiple people injured, with at least ten victims transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

No arrests have been announced so far. Investigators are continuing to work through evidence, including footage from license plate reader cameras, as they try to identify the people behind the attack.

Fox 25 reports that authorities believe two men wearing ski masks were involved.

At the Arcadia Lake campground, one woman told a reporter that her ‘cousin and sister were shot’.

Another person at the scene said he had been shot in the leg, but was reported to be in stable condition.

“It’s very sad to see someone that you know or that you love, just – it’s a very scary, hard thing,” one witness told KTWV.

Edmond police spokesperson Emily Ward stated: “This is obviously a very terrifying situation and we understand the concern from the public and those involved and we are working extremely hard to find the suspects.

“We’re kind of all over the metro speaking with victims and witnesses.”

People who were nearby also claimed they heard rapid, repeated gunfire, with some estimating more than 30 shots.

Before the shooting, the event advertised as ‘Sunday Funday’ had promoted ‘good vibes, good people, food and drinks’ along with ‘music all night’, running from 6pm into the early hours of Monday (May 4).

Ward said most of those attending were thought to be young adults or older teenagers, and officers did not believe any children were at the gathering when the shooting happened.

“We are going to be investigating in and on into tomorrow,” she added.

Police have not taken any suspects into custody, though they have said they do not believe there is an ongoing danger to the wider public at this time.

Officials also noted that those injured were in ‘various conditions’ following the gunfire.

Arcadia Lake—where the shooting took place—is about 21 kilometers north of Oklahoma City. The man-made reservoir is a popular spot for fishing, boating, picnics, and camping.

The lake sits within Edmond, a suburb of Oklahoma City that is home to roughly 100,000 residents.
