The New Zealand police have unveiled new images of a secondary campsite that fugitive Tom Phillips utilized while evading capture with his children, shedding light on a significant aspect of the case.
In 2021, Tom Phillips disappeared along with his children—Jayda, aged eight; Maverick, aged seven; and Ember, who was five then, sparking a thorough police investigation.
On Monday, September 8, it was revealed by authorities that Phillips was fatally shot in a confrontation with police in Marokopa, a coastal town in New Zealand’s Waikato region.
The police were alerted about a burglary at a local farm supply store early in the morning. Upon arrival, they encountered Phillips and one of his children on quad bikes, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
A police officer sustained a critical head injury during the incident. Another officer returned fire.
Phillips was declared dead at the scene, and the child accompanying him was taken into custody. The police subsequently located Phillips’ other two children, who were unharmed.
Authorities have now shared photographs of a second campsite believed to have been used by Phillips and his children after their disappearance four years ago.
This secondary site, situated 200 meters from the original campsite, included a kitchen area and a designated space for sleeping.
During a press briefing on September 10, Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Saunders mentioned that authorities suspect Tom Phillips had assistance from others and are determined to “hold those responsible accountable.” He stated that the investigation continues as they seek to identify who was involved. Items found at the campsite suggest external support, and Saunders confirmed these would be analyzed to ascertain whether they were acquired through thefts or supplied by accomplices.
Mr. Saunders also remarked that they do not believe this campsite was the “primary residence for the last four years.”
There is a suspicion that Phillips received assistance during his time as a fugitive, according to New Zealand police.
“We are currently examining several items at the location. Beyond the burglaries now linked to Tom, it’s clear he had external help,” Saunders elaborated.
“Throughout the investigation, we’ve suspected that Tom Phillips was receiving aid,” he explained.
“We believe it’s crucial to pursue those who supported Tom Phillips and ensure they are held accountable.”
