Pope Leo XIV’s past Twitter activity has come back into the spotlight, potentially drawing attention from US President Donald Trump.
After the passing of Pope Francis at 88 years old last month, and following the traditional nine-day mourning period, the pressing question was who would succeed him as the leader of the Church.
Earlier today, on May 8, it was announced that the conclave had officially selected Cardinal Robert Prevost, 69, as the new pope, who has taken the papal name Pope Leo XIV.
This selection is historic, as Pope Leo XIV is the first American to assume the role of pope.
Although Donald Trump has humorously entertained the idea of becoming pope himself and has even been criticized for a ‘blasphemous’ AI-generated image, he expressed excitement over the election of Pope Leo XIV. However, has Trump overlooked Pope Leo XIV’s past criticisms of his policies, as expressed in several tweets?
Recently, Prevost shared a tweet that stated: “As Trump & Bukele use Oval to Feds’ illicit deportation of a US resident, once an undoc-ed Salvadorean himself, now-DC Aux +Evelio asks, ‘Do you not see the suffering? Is your conscience not disturbed? How can you stay quiet?'”
The Independent also noted Prevost’s reshare of a tweet that said: “There is nothing remotely Christian, American, or morally defensible about a policy that takes children away from their parents and warehouses them in cages. This is being carried out in our name and the shame is on us all.”
Additionally, the newly chosen pope has criticized Trump’s vice president JD Vance, by resharing an op-ed from the National Catholic Reporter titled: “JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others.”
This article was a response to remarks Vance made to Fox News in February, where he stated: “There is a Christian concept that you love your family and then you love your neighbor, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens, and then after that, prioritize the rest of the world.
“A lot of the far left has completely inverted that.”
These resurfaced remarks emerged shortly after Trump shared his reaction to the announcement of the new pope on Truth Social.
In a Truth Social post, Trump expressed: “Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope.
“What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country.
“I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”
