Possible Hurricane Threatens Alabama-Georgia Game Trump Is Slated to Attend in ‘Nightmare Scenario’

A potential hurricane is threatening to disrupt the high-profile Alabama-Georgia football game that former President Donald Trump has announced he will attend.

The storm, which developed into a tropical depression in the Gulf on Tuesday, could strengthen into Category 2 Hurricane Isaias and make landfall by week’s end, according to the National Weather Service. Forecasters have urged residents from Louisiana to Florida to prepare emergency plans as the system tracks toward the northern Gulf Coast.

James Spann, the veteran meteorologist at Birmingham’s ABC 33/40, delivered a stark assessment of the converging events.

“We’ve got potential for a hurricane making landfall in Mobile Bay,” Spann told AL.com. “The Alabama-Georgia game, a presidential visit, ‘College GameDay.’ You got the big [Zach Bryan] concert at Auburn. This is the National Shrimp Festival at Gulf Shores this weekend, which is huge. I mean, you could not … it’s gonna be a nightmare.”

Spann added that given the cluster of major events across the region, he would not be surprised if the Alabama-Georgia contest gets relocated from its scheduled site at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.

The Southeastern Conference acknowledged the looming weather threat in a statement issued Tuesday to multiple outlets.

“Like we do every week at this time, we’re keeping an eye on forecasts and staying in communication with schools with games that could be impacted by weather,” the league said.

The matchup carries substantial national interest even without the meteorological complication. Georgia enters ranked No. 2, while Alabama sits at No. 7, setting up a rare top-10 clash between the SEC powers. ESPN’s “College GameDay” has scheduled its pregame broadcast from the venue, adding another layer of logistical complexity should conditions deteriorate.

Trump confirmed his plans to attend during a Saturday event in Mobile, where he addressed the game’s significance.

“They say it’s going to be a good game,” Trump said. “I would think so. Let’s see, one is rated No. 2 [Georgia], and one is rated No. 7 [Alabama], but that doesn’t matter too much at this stage.”

The former president’s appearance will mark his second college football attendance in as many weeks, following his presence at the Tennessee-Texas game in Knoxville two weeks prior.

As of Tuesday, kickoff remains set for 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday. The National Hurricane Center continues to monitor the depression’s development trajectory, with uncertainty remaining about precise impacts on the Tuscaloosa area specifically.

The storm threat arrives during an already packed weekend across Alabama. Beyond the football spectacle and Trump’s visit, Auburn is hosting a major Zach Bryan concert, while Gulf Shores prepares for its annual National Shrimp Festival, a significant regional draw.
