Social media was abuzz on Monday night as Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suddenly collapsed on the field during the Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Prayers and well-wishes were sent to Hamlin, who was given CPR before being taken to the hospital. The game was subsequently suspended.
“The 24-year-old Hamiln was taken off the field on a stretcher and rushed to the hospital at around 9:25 p.m. Eastern Time,” noted the report.
An early report by Fox Sports reporter Joe Danneman claimed that Hamlin had a pulse but was not breathing on his own immediately after his collapse.
Hamlin, 24, collapsed on the field after suffering a cardiac arrest during the first quarter of the game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Buffalo Bills released a statement on Twitter saying that player had suffered a cardiac arrest following a tackle and his heartbeat was restored on the field.
The player, identified as Hamlin, was then transferred to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for further testing and treatment. The Bills noted that the player is currently sedated.
At 5:58 of the first quarter, play was suspended and the NFL officially postponed the game. The league stated that the wellbeing of Hamlin is the priority and more details on next steps will come at an appropriate time.
