A captivating miniseries featuring the late Diane Keaton is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
The renowned Hollywood actress passed away on Saturday, October 11 at the age of 79. A representative for her family confirmed she died in California, though no additional details about her passing were provided.
Woody Allen, a former co-star of Keaton, has since honored the Oscar-winning actress with a tribute.
Throughout her career, Keaton and Allen worked together on eight out of his 50 films, most famously in Annie Hall, which earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Keaton’s illustrious career, which extended over five decades, found her breakthrough role as Kay Adams-Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather in 1972. She subsequently appeared in various TV series, including the miniseries The Godfather Saga.
However, there is another critically acclaimed miniseries that fans have described as ‘genius.’
This series stars Jude Law, known for Black Rabbit, as Lenny Belardo, a relatively unknown American cardinal who unexpectedly becomes Pope.
Contrary to what some might assume, this was not filmed following the election of Pope Leo XIV, the first US pope. Instead, the show debuted in 2016, running for ten episodes on HBO.
In the series, as the youngest pontiff, Lenny asserts his authority by tightening control over Church affairs and instituting radical new policies, all while avoiding the public spotlight.
Lenny leans on the support of Sister Mary (played by Keaton), the nun who raised him, but soon finds himself entangled in power struggles with senior cardinals and Vatican insiders who aim to control or undermine him.
The series in question is The Young Pope, which is currently available for streaming on HBO through its Prime Video add-on.
The miniseries achieved a 79 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers giving it an 87 percent score out of more than 1,000 reviews.
Natalia Marcos from El Pais remarked that The Young Pope ‘leaves you glued to the screen,’ describing it as ‘visually hypnotic,’ although she noted the plot felt ‘almost empty.’
On the other hand, Spike Friedman from The Stranger praised the show for its ‘great performances and a genuine air of mystery.’
One audience member admitted to having doubts initially, only to be completely impressed by the end. “I was confused… only to end thinking ‘genius,'” they shared.
Another viewer commented, “Visually impressive, well acted, good plot, some moments very poignant,” and described it as “A must-watch, binge-worthy series.”
Over on Reddit, the conversation about the show found its way to the R/ForgottenTV community a few months ago.
“Not forgotten by me. All time favorite,” one person responded.
“Among its many other charms, it’s a brilliant examination of how power works, or can work, and how someone with absolute power can choose to wield it,” another user added, noting that one particular scene—left unspoiled here—was a ‘masterpiece.’
The Young Pope is available for streaming now on HBO through Prime Video.
