Finding someone to hold you close is one of life’s significant challenges, a dream many strive for but not everyone attains. Nowadays, an increasing number of individuals are willing to pay for such comfort.
According to a 2024 poll by the American Psychiatric Association, around one in three adults nationwide experiences loneliness at least weekly.
For young men, the situation is even more concerning. A Gallup study indicates that 25 percent of Gen Z males report feeling lonely daily, with the size of male friendship circles decreasing substantially over the past three decades. Currently, only one in four young men have friendship groups of six or more, a number that has dropped by more than half. Therefore, it’s not surprising that the demand for professional cuddlers is on the rise.
One professional cuddler has disclosed the guidelines she adheres to when meeting clients for a non-romantic companionship session, along with the earnings she makes from people seeking affection.
While most of her clients are men, the Reddit user clarified during an ‘Ask Me Anything’ session that her service does not involve sex work and is strictly ‘over the clothes.’
But how does she handle situations where a client might become overly enthusiastic during a hugging session? “I rarely encounter such clients because I screen them carefully,” explained the college student.
However, this isn’t to say these situations never arise during her cuddling sessions, which can range from one to eight hours.
She added, “When it happens, I calmly remind them of the boundaries. If they can’t adhere to them, I politely conclude the session and leave. My safety is non-negotiable.”
These instances are exceptions rather than the norm. Her clients have diverse preferences; some enjoy a quiet embrace, while others prefer to converse during the session.
Although all her clients are male, the college student noted that individuals willing to pay for a hug vary in age, with her oldest client being 65.
These clients provide a substantial income for the professional cuddler, who charges up to $100 per hour for her services. This allows her to earn between $3,500 and $5,000 monthly, depending on the number of clients she sees.
The job requires skill, as the professional must utilize various cuddling techniques to meet her clients’ physical and emotional needs.
She mentioned, “Most clients appreciate when I rub their back and play with their hair. During a typical session, the positions change several times.”
“Every client is unique. One client likes when I gently run my nails down his back, while another prefers being held from behind in a criss-cross position.”
Even though the service is platonic and non-sexual, the importance of appearance remains.
The cuddling expert noted, “I’m not like an Instagram model, but I’m not unattractive either. My clients have indicated that they consider physical attraction.”
