Donald Trump has raised alarms with his recent actions in the Oval Office, suggesting he may run for president once more.
The 79-year-old former president has mentioned the possibility of seeking a third term multiple times, despite this being against the Constitution.
The 22nd Amendment limits a person from holding the presidency for more than two terms, which Trump has already completed with his wins in 2016 and 2024.
Nonetheless, Trump has recently posted an image to Truth Social that could indicate his intentions to challenge the norm.
The photograph depicted the former president in the Oval Office, surrounded by ‘Trump 2028’ hats, during a meeting with Democratic leaders aimed at preventing a government shutdown on Monday (September 29).
This post came shortly after news of the government’s impending shutdown, the first since 2018-2019, was confirmed.
Hakeem Jeffries, the minority leader of the US House of Representatives, has spoken out about Trump’s behavior following the distribution of the image and an AI video mocking Jeffries.
On CNN, Jeffries remarked: “He is an unserious individual and the Republicans are unserious at this point.
“They have no interest in having a good faith conversation and all of the behavior erratic, unhinged behavior that we have seen should suggest to the American people who actually is trying to drive us toward a government shutdown.”
Social media users were quick to criticize Trump for both the post and the implied suggestion of another presidential run.
A Twitter user expressed: “Trump spent yesterday’s meeting with Democratic leadership taunting them with ‘Trump 2028’ hats. He’s not serious about keeping the government open. He’s openly mocking America’s Constitution.”
Another user remarked: “If Trump can flaunt his Trump 2028 hats on the Resolute desk, trample the Constitution & run for a 3rd term – Barack Obama can run for a 3rd term.”
Additionally, one person noted: “The hat serves as the warning for what’s to come. Some folk keep ignoring that warning.”
Another individual criticized the Democrats for remaining at the meeting despite the visible ‘2028 Trump’ hats.
They said: “When you walk into a meeting with Trump that is supposed to be a bipartisan negotiation on a funding resolution and he has ‘Trump 2028’ merch strewn across the table, the correct response is TO WALK OUT OF THE F****** ROOM.”
The White House has been contacted for comment.
