De-icing the car is a universally disliked task, but specialists have shared a simple method to clear your windows efficiently and safely.
We’ve all experienced it: waking up late, grabbing a quick breakfast, and rushing to the car only to find it covered in ice. This can result in a delay as you struggle to de-ice it, potentially angering your boss further when you finally make it to work.
The good news is, there is a way to defrost your windshield swiftly and effortlessly, according to experts.
However, it’s crucial to avoid a common mistake that could lead to a cracked windscreen.
Experts strongly caution against using boiling water. The RAC recommends ‘lukewarm water’ instead. According to their website, “In the past, people used to boil water in the kettle and then throw it on the frozen car to quickly melt the car.”
“This is a very dangerous thing to do! It will likely crack the glass – and even if it doesn’t, repeatedly doing it will weaken the glass.”
Known as ‘thermal shock,’ this practice is ill-advised. Although it seems like a quick fix, taking a little extra time is worthwhile to avoid the expense of replacing a windscreen.
Using lukewarm water is a safer alternative if you don’t have de-ice spray available.
The most effective method to remove ice swiftly is by using a de-icer. It’s a good idea to keep one handy during the winter months, especially given the freezing conditions being experienced in many areas of the US.
The RAC advises motorists to store a de-icer in their car for easy access wherever they are. “These concentrated formulas are able to quickly clear ice and snow without it refreezing,” states the RAC on its website. “A high-quality spray won’t damage your vehicle’s paintwork, rubber, or plastics.”
“It can be used on all windows, windscreens, and lights. Also, de-ice spray is effective even when the temperature reaches its seasonal lows.”
In addition to commercial de-icers, motorist Adrian Garner suggests a more budget-friendly option using an empty spray bottle.
Whether using a repurposed air freshener bottle or a cleaned-out spray cleaner, filling it with water can work effectively.
Remember, as previously mentioned, the water should be ‘lukewarm,’ not boiling.
“Little life hack for you, instead of spending loads of money on de-icer,” Garner shared with NeedToKnow.
