Mitchell Whitfield, 62, has traded Hollywood sets for a tabletop gaming microphone as host of the weekly PBG Podcast.
The actor, who played Rachel Green’s jilted fiancé Barry in six episodes of Friends, now co-hosts “Positively Board Gaming,” a podcast that releases new episodes every Thursday at 8 p.m. ET. His Instagram bio describes the show as a “welcoming space to deepen your appreciation for tabletop games.”
Whitfield still embraces his sitcom legacy in that same bio, listing himself as “Barry from #FRIENDS, Stan from #MyCousinVinny, voice of Fixit, Donatello, Demi and more. Host of YourTechReport and @pbgpodcast.”
His voice work includes Donatello in the 2007 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. After Friends, he also guest-starred in Murder, She Wrote and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. In his personal life, he has two children, Ryan and Samantha, with his wife Tracy.
Barry’s role in Friends lore proved pivotal despite the limited screen time. Rachel, played by Jennifer Aniston, ditched Barry at the altar in the pilot, fled to Central Perk, and reunited with former best friend Monica Geller, setting up the entire series dynamic. Barry first appeared physically in the second episode, when Rachel visited his dentist office to return her engagement ring and discovered he had taken their planned honeymoon with her maid of honor, Mindy.
That relationship progressed quickly. Barry and Mindy became engaged, and he returned in the 20th episode of season one, “The One Where the Monkey Got Away.” Rachel attended their wedding with Ross Geller.
Eagle-eyed fans later spotted an inconsistency with Barry’s name. During the pilot, Rachel referred to him as Barry Finkle while leaving voicemails defending why she walked out on the wedding. In subsequent episodes, he became Dr. Barry Farber.
One fan took to Reddit to flag the discrepancy, posting: “Just rewatched the pilot episode and Rachel says that Barry’s last name is Finkle..but in later episodes he’s referred to as Dr. Barry Farber!”
The post drew confirmation from other viewers. One replied: “There were in a fact a few changes from the pilot episode. Such as the actress who plays Carol plus some other details, including Barry’s surname.”
Another fan exclaimed: “I KNEW I WASNT CRAZY!”
A third offered an explanation for the shift: “Yeah sometimes the writer’s say one thing then they forget it and ends up being changed.”
The pilot featured multiple details that later changed, including the actress portraying Carol, Ross’s ex-wife. Whitfield’s character remained Barry Farber for the rest of the series run.
Friends premiered September 22, 1994, meaning more than three decades have passed since Whitfield first appeared as the orthodontist fiancé. The show remains one of television’s most-streamed sitcoms, keeping his early performance in regular rotation for new generations of viewers discovering Rachel’s escape from her wedding day.
